The Superstring Adventure

Rob Myers

Perimeter Institute

Theoretical physicists have invested over twenty years studying superstring theory in the hope of bringing together Einstein gravity and quantum mechanics. It has even entered the popular culture as the "ultimate theory of everything". Strings? Branes? Ten spacetime dimensions? Calabi-Yau manifolds? My lecture will provide a introductory tour of this exotic frontier of theoretical physics. I will try to give you a flavour for what superstring theory is all about and why physicists, like myself, continue to so excited about this, perhaps the final theory.
