Battling the Bugs: Confronting the Microbial Menace

B. Brett Finlay

Michael Smith Laboratories
University of British Columbia

Microbes continue to cause disease and death worldwide, and drug resistance is increasing in many of them. By understanding basic pathogenic mechanisms, one may develop novel therapeutics and preventative treatments. Our lab has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of the well-known bacteria E. coli and Salmonella. These pathogens have sophisticated mechanisms which drive bacterial molecules into host cells, reprogram infected cells, and neutralize host defenses. A general overview of the mechanisms used by these pathogens will be presented, as will approaches that have been developed to counter them. I will also discuss approaches to develop a SARS vaccine, in the broader context of emerging infectious diseases (such as H1N1 influenza, or 'swine flu').
